Double Gun Gobbler - Osceola #2
« on: March 21, 2010, 01:39:59 PM »
Well its a pretty dreary day here in Central Florida.  Overcast skies plus wind and rain. Not to mention the mosquitoes have arrived from their winter retreat.

After scoring yesterday with my old standby turkey gun, I decided to finally take out the 1970's era Browning BSS side by side I purchased last fall.  The gun originally belonged to a elderly gentleman from Nebraska who used it for an upland gun before retiring the gun in the 1980's in favor of an over/under. Following the recommendations of a few of you I paired it up with Winchester Supreme 3" #6 loads.

I arrived to the area a bit late and heard hen chatter from the roost no sooner than I closed the truck door.  I didn't hear any gobbling whatsoever.  I decided to quickly set up on a fence line adjacent to the pasture I was successful on yesterday.  Some birds flew down a matter of minutes later but landed in a deep pine plantation on the opposite side of the fence.  I brought out an Alan Sentell crystal pot caller and let off some assembly yelps to which the hens would occasionally reply.  This kept up for an hour before a single hen crossed under the fence about 50 yards out.   Sometime later another hen joined the first and they slowly eased toward me.  Out of the corner of my eye I spotted a big red head slipping through the fence and a big bodied gobbler emerged.  A few tense minutes later he was within range, and I said a little prayer hoping the old double wouldnt let me down.

It didn't...

20.5 pounds, 10"+ beard, spurs measuring 1 1/8" and 1 1/4"...

My daughter Izabel decided to join the fun!  She's gonna be ready for hunting in a few years I hope!

No blow drying necessary, just a whole bunch of swatting to get the damp sand off him.  Although I noticed in the first pic with my daughter I missed a spot in the center of the tail feathers.  The wife was nice enough to snap the pics for me near our home...
