50,000 Year Old Ancient Kauri Wood Pot Call
« on: March 08, 2010, 07:02:49 PM »
Here are a few Pictures of the Ancient Kauri Wood that I turned into a Turkey Call. Ancient Kauri Wood comes from New Zeland. It is being reclaimed from Peat Bogs and has been Carbon Dated to be 50,000+ Years Old. This Wood does not look all that special when it arrived and I put it aside. When I finally got around to turning and finishing a Call out of it I was really impressed at how the almost non-descript wood when cutting, turning and sanding. Came alive when I started to apply the Sealer and Finish Coats. This wood looks Awesome!

Nice looking call Tim.  I was wondering how that wood would work for a call.  From what I've seen on the internet, it's some of the most expensive wood out there.

Danny, I guess I was ahead of the curve on finding purchasing and using this wood. I was looking around for something new and different and came across this wood 2 or 3 years ago. I called and talked to the people that handle this stuff and told them what I was looking for. They said they would take a looks and get back to me. After a couple days they called me back and told me they had found some wood that they thought I would like. I placed an order. I still have a few pieces left to make calls out of. It is kind of powdery to work with at first until you get it turned, sanded sealed and add a few coats of finish to it!
