Question for wingbone yelper makers

Why have I heard that the hen bones are much better for the calls than the Toms???

never made one, but i would assume it would have to do with the size being smaller and more narrow.

I've put together about a dozen or so wing bone calls all with either Jake or Gobbler bones. I know I've got a lot to learn still but the calls sounded great to me. Last week I found a hen that got smacked by a car so I releaved her of some bones. I just finished putting them together tonight and they sound fantastic. They really sound way better than my other calls. The bones are a lot smaller and produce a totally different sound. I can see why they are preferred over tom wing bones.

You can use the bigger bones and tune them also Also how you hold your hands over the end can get you a higher pitch too.

Yup. You can choke down on the bell end and get a higher pitch.

Rob's right.  There are a 100 different ways to tune bones to get a desires tone and pitch.  Obiviously, the way you hold your hands changes the volume.  I guess it all comes down to what the user prefers.

    Some of the finest playing wingbone calls were made from a mix of birds....  I personally don't like hen bones...too high pitched, too small a bone to get good lip seal on, uncomfortable and leave yah with very little diversity in sound.  Jake bones are my preference.  Of course all said, it's just my opinion.---Jason

Some guys will hold a finger over the end cutting off some of the air to get a kee kee. I find it easier to get a kee kee this way

Keep it up ,,,,,I'm a fairly good student,,,,,,,,,,,been strugglin' with a wingbone for a year ,,,,,,,,,,,very limted on sounds , but when I hit it right it is a hen yelpin' ,,,,,,,,,,,, help!

Hunter1018...you just made a whistle out of the call, you have to almost totally cut off all of the air to do this...  not really the same as "choking down on the bell" I assume this to be cupping the hands or a finger partial obstruction of the bell or a combination of the two....

By choking down I meant constricting air flow.
