Turkeys hear it every day ,,,,,,,,,
« on: January 29, 2010, 07:47:10 PM »
I've been wrong many, many times concerning turkeys and numerous other subjects . But there is a sound that turkeys hear every day of their life , whether it is made by themself or other turkeys . But they know it and relate to it . The three and four stroke scratch of a feeding turkey .  In my opinion it is the deadliest of calls . But it can be the most dangerous to use on many occasions ,,,especially public land . It could get you busted by toms good eye too. Risky business to say the least . We all agree the purr will relax a tom , some more than others . I believe the 3 or 4 stroke in the leaves will relax even more . Nervous birds don't feed . they keep their head up . I watched a hen one time from about 450- 500 yards with binocs . She walked out of the woods to a fields edge . It was raining straight down . She actually saw my movement and I was inside a truck . Her head shot up and she stood motionless for about 30 minutes . During this time a gobbler came from the opposite direction and got within 20 -30 yards of the hen then he too raised his head and froze in that position . Now my point here is the nervousness . The relaxed bird will pick and scratch and feed as it moves about . The purr is a close contact call of reassuance and safety. What goes with the purr better than the scratchin' of the leaves or barren soil ?

I prefer the wing of a DEAD gobbler . Raking through the leaf litter , flipping the debris first in one direction , then the other . Soon getting down to bare earth for some dirt to flipp here and there with those stout wing tips , as I slowly mix in some feathers and brush noise . REALISTIC SOUNDS FOOL TURKEYS.

I've read that the purring of feeding birds in close quarters is to keep the birds spaced in a comfort zone without annoying the other members of the flock by not coming to close to their area, where they are feeding.

I like to use soft purrs, soft clucks and leaf scratching together....

Absolutely , And at times any number of softer calls could be mixed into the scenario . A couple of super soft yelps among purring and scratching, and a lousy sounding jake gobble . Imagine a gobbler off say 50 to 100 yards  as he listens to this low volume flock noise . Among the purrs , scratching, an occasional faint cluck comes a jake gobble ,,,,,,,,that annoys a gobbler . No , nothing is a sure thing in turkey hunting , but the more we have to work with the more likely to succeed.

Two years ago at 11:30 am the boys and I were hunting our way back toward the truck when this 1 year old started gobbling hard and often . We terrained him and set up . He kept it up as we attempted to pull him in . He wouldn't fall for any of it . I backed out and moved away in hopes of making him advance toward the departing hen . As I moved away an older tom came running down the hill and chased the jake away . Then tom raced back up the hill . Heck of a show .

I think fall hunting has exposed me to hearing more subtle soft calling then I ever heard in the spring woods. Once those flocks have been busted up and harrased a few times they barely make a peep while regrouping. It has taught me so much and totally changed the way I call in the woods.
