I gotta tell ya, if the ammo manufacturers have their way you'll be shooting #9's before long.  This will keep them from having to melt down all the shot that doesnt pass QC and trying again.  Dont get me wrong, I'm not one of those "use lead shot and 2 3/4' is all you need" guys.  I use a 3" load of #6 Hevi's and I'm here to tell you its down right deadly when choked correctly.

I'm a bit uncomfortable with relying on the #7 shot that I use to kill doves when I'm hunting turkey.  Simple physics says that something must be lost when you go to smaller shot.  At what point does that decision become irresponsible and results in a slew of rookie turkey hunters who didnt pattern their gun spending the entire spring wounding birds?  Just my opinion...

Comparing lead shot to the HTL new stuff is like comparing apples to oranges.  It's all in the density.  Unfortunately, the push to get rid of lead has introduced a lot of the newer stuff.  I need to check 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure most of MO public hunting land is HTL shells only.

Nitro has been loading hevi-12 7's for years and they have absolutely put the smack down on birds.  Tungsten shot appears to be the most dense we can get at the moment (someone posted once uranium shot is the only thing harder... not a physicist so not sure).  Who knows what direction we are heading with shells!

I hear you and I understand all the physics involved, I went from lead #4's to Hevi #6's and wont go back.  But admittedly something seems awry when we start talking about patterns at 50 yards or more.  And its these ranges that those shells are being made for.  I remember when turkey hunting was about patience, skill, and woodsmanship.  Alas, it appears turkey hunting will eventually be no different than prairie dog hunting.  Simply wait to see one and pick him off at 100 yards..

I know what you are talking about there...  I shoot them, but in no way am I looking at shooting that far.  Call them in and smack them!

I shoot a 20, so that's why I shoot the smaller shot!  40 yards is what I pattern at and I always try and make sure that bird is closer than that.  I've misjudged before, but I'm terrible at distance judging.  The reason I range find everything!  Heck I've shot one before a mere feet from the gun barrel.  Long story why, but that was almost too close!  Still get a good laugh over that one with my buddy!

I use Hevi-13 #6's in the 3" standard load.  I shoot the load through a Kicks Gobbling Thunder choke with a .680 constriction.  Some say I should be shooting a tighter choke, in any event the gobblers I've shot look like they were stuck with a sledgehammer when I squeeze the trigger.  Not even so much as a flop in most cases.

My Browning Gold actually didn't pattern as well with the 3 1/2" load, and given the additional recoil I didnt really mind staying with the 3"....

For the 12, the 6's will be great.  Us 20 gauge shooters are loving the 7's because EM messed up our shells.  They wouldn't shoot worth a darn!

The Magnum blend is supposed to do pretty good too.  Don't overlook it.  Not real sure what they have cooked up for it, but they are supposed to be getting great patterns.

I'm not man enough to shoot those 3 1/2 (I've shot several, but never wanted to take that beating)... so I'd pick 3inchers :)

The Hevi 3 inch 6s in the 835 drop those gobblers!

I guess I just don't get the smaller shot sizes. Any lead or htl shot #6 or bigger will do the job just fine inside 40 yards so why the need to go smaller.

One phrase More for your money!!!  Smaller shot generally means more pellets per ounce.  More pellets equal better chance for success.  That's why I went with it.  More room for error.  I know those toms get my heart a pumping  *cheers*

Take my 20 for example, Never seen a lead load that would make a 40 yard gun out of it.  The HTL shells have it smoking at 40 and absolutely putting the smack down on them closer.  It's all about the density.

With the extra weight of the HTL...the 7's hit as hard as #5 lead, plus it's more pellets which is more room for shooter error.  In addition the HTL 7's will retain their energy past 40 yards just incase you misjudge by a few yards.  That's just my personal thoughts  *cheers*

You and me both.  Not sure why the loaded the magnum blend faster and not these.  I just got my boxes of 20's in and hope to shoot this weekend.  It will be in the upper 30's, but I cannot wait to fire some!
