need help identifying wood

I got this wood from an old barn and I'm not sure what it is.  I know a lot of Southwestern Pennsylvania barns were made out of chestnut , but this is not chestnut.  I'm thinking red oak because it is heavy and dense.

Hard to tell by that picture but my quess would be red oak.

It does look like oak, but can you  post just one photo of the third photo down so that it will post a lot larger, that  is if you're linking to a host site.  Then I'll probably be able to tell you for sure if it's oak and whether its a red or white oak.

That's kind of a neat star feature in the very center of that cut in that third photo.

Matt, I have several pieces of different species that I kept for the grain and/or unique features in large enough pieces to display. Just Tung oil (several coats) I would do a section on that like that for sure. A friend who worked at a saw mill cut a tree that was about 36 inches across the log and shaved right by an arrow head that was in the center of the log. An Indian apparently has shot at something and it stuck in the tree and the tree grew around it. It was estimated the tree was over 200 years old. He sliced it about 2 inches thick and had in framed in a shadow box. One of the coolest thing I have ever saw.
