45 degrees and my brother's dog almost got snakebit
« on: January 24, 2010, 08:35:22 PM »
my brother was down in sw georgia this weekend and about lost his dog.  he, his 2 girls and his dog were walking down to the pond and murray (the dog) ran ahead of my brother and went onto the dock.  as he did, my brother looked up and saw something laying on the dock, right where his dog just ran past.  my brother yelled at murray, who turned around and ran right past the object, what turned out to be a snake.   when the dog got back on land, my brother grabbed a large log and tossed it on the snake, which was a large cotton mouth.  he then went up to it and beat it to death with a metal pole.  fortunately it was 45 degrees and the snake was very lethargic.  the snake measured 4 feet 2 inches long.

i know, i had to take out a timber rattler 3 years ago in about the same temp.  it was one of the colder opening weekends of deer season i can remember and i had shot a buck the day before and we lost the blood trail.  the next morning when i finished my morning hunt, i went cruising around looking to see if i could stumble upon the deer.  i had given my gun to a buddy, who was going to help load up a doe that another friend had shot.  as luck would have it, i ended up walking up on a 3.5 ft rattler, which i turned my lost deer frustration on and beat it to death with a stick.

I was crossing a creek down in a swamp in Mississippi three years ago on a turkey hunt in March. I was just putting my foot down and my son grabbed my shoulder. I was stepping right onto a cotton mouth. His mouth was open and ready to bite. He was about as big around as my forearm, and I am a big guy. It was real cool that morning and that was the only thing that kept him from biting me. I will not hunt down there ever again without snake boots. I did not have them on that trip.

No respect should be given to a man who does not honor his word. He is just an adolescent who's acorns haven't dropped yet.

Those who stir the S**T pot should have to lick the spoon.

you are lucky.  my brother said this one was about the size of his forearm as well.  i've never seen a 4+ ft cotton mouth before.

They are rare at that size but have seen a few. A good friend of mine was bite by cotton mouth that was said to be that big when we were in the 8th grade. She was in the hospital for weeks and nearly lost her life. Was on a girl Scouting camp out.
