I've got about 6 hours of video from Zach Farmer discussing and playing his trumpet yelpers, but i have always been reluctant to share.  Just never knew how he would feel about someone sharing his tutorial.  Bill do you have any insight on this.  I haven't talked to him in a bit.

Some years ago, I made several recordings of and for Zach. I don't know of anyone who can play his call, as well as he can. Brings chills up my back every time, I hear him call!  He says I'm pretty good on one....LOL.....Zach doesn't like hurting anyone's feelings! Zach has always been willing to walk a person thru, on his calling style. But like any call maker, he won't give up his secrets to success.  ;)

It is a fine instrument indeed, but I must say that the operator renders the rasp. I've heard Zach speak to this point before. Jacobson you can get nice raspy yelps from one of your Buice trumpets if you spend enough time with it. It takes dedication to get the most out of these calls.

Very true! One can reproduce a raspy sound on just about any trumpet. It takes wet lips and practice. Most people draw to hard on the call to begin with, making it difficult to add rasp.

I agree with the wet lips and all, and yes I can run any trumpet and make it raspy, but I attribute the hard core rasp and sound to the mouth pieces on Zachs trumpets as well. His sound file does not sound like a trumpet for sure. Thanks to all on the replies.........

The notched mouth piece does make it easier to add rasp in Zach's calls. Herb Hornsrta took a page from Zach and added the notch to his calls, some years back.

I agree Bill. The v-notch on the "beak" of the woodwind does lend itself for raspy notes versus the typical round mp's. Proper saliva and training of the neck muscles are required. Perfect raspy hen yelps can be rendered with no visible movement of the lips.
