It seems like the fall season is the redheaded stepchild of turkey hunting which is too bad. I agree the lack of the gobbling of spring is a bit of a downer but having the ability to chase after bird again is a blessing.
For the past few weeks it has been really fun watching the flocks of turkeys grow in the local fields. The hens and poults are finding each other with the jakes and toms starting to be seen in the same fields. The male and female separation has the same look as oil and water (together but separate) but at least they are beginning to congregate.
In Vermont, the fall archery season kicks off the first weekend of October and runs concurrent with archery season for deer. I've got my eye on a group of 3 toms (best guess is two year old birds) which have been cruising the pastures and woods by the house. The bow is all tuned up to the arrows (shooting the Magnus Bullhead and Muzzy M.O.R.E. heads) and I am itching to get goig. Taking a turkey with a bow on the ground without a blind is rewarding. Plus, I get to spend a lot of time in the woods which for me, is the equivalent of going to church.
