Elk shed

I've been trying to get this 7 point elk shed off my buddy for months. It's from a California Tule elk. Well last night my buddy called to say he saw Santa set it over my fence while I was away. Now that I got it I can't decide if I should cut it up for calls or make something else out of it. Anybody got suggestions? I already have a horizontal coat rack so thats out. Being its a Tule elk and I might never get my hands on another I'm really don't want to cut it up.

Make something out of it you will keep forever or at least until it wears out. I killed a small rack buck last year and didnt have any plans for the rack so I thought I would turn me a writing pen from it. Its the bottom one.

Is it wide enough in the palmated area to turn a pot out of it?  If so let me know.  *up*

Gary that set looks great.  I have a pen/pencil set made from deer antler.

Lou, we think alike. That was the first thing I noticed. It's 4in wide at that point and about 1 1/4 thick. I could get one full size and 2 purr pots out of that area. But I can't decide if I want to cut it up  *cry*

Send it to me and I will cut it up for you ;D. That wakes all the pressure off you. I only need pieces that are 1" in diameter anyhow.

Wow !!!!  That is a nice one.  Cut it up ???   Man I would be like a beaver on crack with that thing. The section in the  last picture would be awesome to carve.

If you're wanting to carve it..get in touch with a guy that goes by the name, dragonfly, and have him help you out. This guy has some of the, best work you will ever see.

Well I talked the wife into letting me put it on the mantel. I just can't cut it up, Tule elk are so scarce and only in a few areas of Ca. Most of us will never get a chance to hunt one or own a shed. Maybe I'll have someone scrimshaw or do a little carving on it when funds permit. If it had of been from a rocky mountain elk I'd already have been selling calls from it.
