a Georgia bird makes a mistake
« on: March 27, 2015, 04:03:04 PM »
This morn found me in Georgia on a friends place I refer to as "where the Buffalo roam". its a great piece of ground in the heart of NW Georgia mountains. I slipped into my favorite ridge very early with not great weather. Walked to the end of a backbone to listen, only to discover that had I stood at the vehicle back some 1/2 mile or more I could have just slipped in the woods. The birds began gobbeling and I had to double time it back to where I started the walk from .....I was slipping in on 2 gobbling birds and got as close as I dare with no cover  and took a seat on a oak. Got settled in and started to lay out a few calls, the birds I sat on gobbled, and suddenly a bird hit from the way I walked in...I had to have walked almost under him the way I had come. I think he reacted to the other two as that was the only sound he made all morn. I couldn't believe I hadn't blown him out of his tree when I passed . The 2 birds were feeling it and continued announcing daybreak and then I finally knew they had pitched into my bottom . It was on---one was answering a lot and slowly getting closer. He made it to the hen on the hill and found a load of Nitro's launched at his head. He was lit up and drumming very loud. For a mountain bird --he had some real good spurs---I will get a tape on them when I get home ....
