What to do when it won't tune
« on: December 17, 2014, 06:34:50 AM »
This call wouldn't tune so I added another coat of finish and still found a use for it after all. Any more duds will get a hook and gifted to my hunting friends.

Good idea. I could add a few box calls and slates to your tree.

Thanks for the laughs and suggestions on what to do with the rest of the duds. Feeding the fire is an effective re-purposing but feels slightly defeatist. My wire hook works but looks awful. The next free addition will be made with a shortened lanyard. The hole will go through the body to give it the corner hang dangle.

Martha has a 5 gallon bucket right behind my Chair in work room. I seem to keep it full for her. Make great fire starter kits;

I machine these on a mill so the sound board and chamber(?) are all one piece. Only the opening for the sound chamber is glued on. I tune them by playing and thinning the sound board. The jig on the mill allows taking off about two thou. at a pass. I've been experimenting with keeping the edge thickness the same and thinning out the sound board leaving a rim as the surface to run along the striker peg.  The duds have more value as a gift ornament then as a working call.

 OK, I build mine a tad different. The body is one piece but the sound board is separate, allowing me to change it out if I don't get the sound I want.
