This is a call I made for my own use following Charles L Jordan"s instructions...he said "It is a tedious job to make a good call, but when you have one properly made, it will last a great while, and I think this call is the best in the world." As I worked on this call, I tried to imagine this task as it would have been done in the 1880's and construct mine in a similar fashion. I also wanted it to have an aged look as something from that era. Of course, I did use my lathe for certain tasks such as tapering the sections for the ferrules, final fitting was done with a knife and sandpaper.
I used some old rod varnish I had for the windings, brushed it on the cane and then sanded lightly to give it the aged look I wanted. The silver ferrules were re-purposed from an old bamboo fly rod too far gone to restore. I imagine Mr. Jordan carried his call in a shirt pocket, I made a case from a section of cane and used some figured walnut that Scott Witter sent me for end caps.
I have had this on my to-do list for a long time now, I finally got some hen radius bone and had to build it so I could stop thinking about it..lol. I'm pretty pleased with the results and will see if the turkeys like it tomorrow.
