Finished: Rooster Cogburn/John Wayne Call

Not to wear everyone out with this call, but I said I'd update the post when I finished the scrimshaw. So, I added pics of the completed scrimshaw pieces and final call below. As much as I do love John Wayne, he and I need to take a break from one another now. I sure have appreciated everyone's comments on this call.


Rooster Cogburn is my favorite character he played. So, I put all Rooster Cogburn stuff on here. The rifle is a model 1892 with a large loop, and the pistol is a Colt single action army, both of which he carried as Rooster Cogburn and in most of his other movies, too. I think the carvings on the side have about the same effect as checkering, as far as sound goes. I carved the basket weave pattern on the top of the paddle just because I like it, and it has a sort of tooled leather feel to it. I put that little rawhide piece through the handle just for decoration. You see them on the saddle rings on the sides of the 1892 rifles. But it serves no purpose on the call, really. I'll update the pics when I get the scrimshaw done. I have LOT of dots to make still. The call is figured English Walnut from Oregon, which I've had for a few years, with ebony inlays.

I genuinely don't know where to begin and thus I am left essentially speechless.  The call work is one thing, the scrimshaw work (BTW), I have known several, whom I thought were gifted scrimshaw artists on Cape Cod and Nantucket, but your work equally stands TALL to theirs!   Simply remarkable--thank you for your work.

The work on the call...the basket weave, the appropriate superlatives excape me, patience dedication, but worst of all is the fact that I was about to post another call of mine, but how in the world do I follow this??

Simply elegant Mike! That is a beautiful call    
I worked at Bath Iron Works (for almost a quarter of a century) and was on the launching crew for the launch of the USS Oliver Hazard Perry. The champagne bottle was deployed for the christening, yet the ship didn't begin the slide down the ways. Someone in the crowd jokingly hollered to John to give a shove. He grinned and put his shoulder into it whereupon the ship began to move, picking up speed as it slid down the ways and plunged into the Kennebec River. He was a good sport and a great actor, the crowd loved it!
