I have some where the "floor" of the box is sooo thin, paper thin, that they are starting to crack where the screw goes through into the pyramid cone. Of course some of these are well over 25 years old, and some of them have been hunted, before and after I received them, which is no shame by any means. I have never seen one crafted from a solid piece of wood, so you may be on to something there, but it is hard to imagine that you will get the floor thin enough, with out blowing right through it. I have often thought too that they would be allful time consuming to build, even if it was done by pieces. I like to hunt them though, you buildem', I'll huntem', accepting all prototypes for a field test.
