Scouting for birds

I'm fairly new to turkey hunting. I have killed a few, called some in a time or two without a shot (more times then I care to say haha). Iv also been successful in locating vocal birds. It may be a pretty vague subject but how do you guys scout for birds that aren't vocal, or setup on them for that matter. I can scout fields. The area that I am looking to hunt is a very good public area with Rocky Pine ridges in southeast Ok. Mostly solid timber and gets pretty good pressure. There are food plots planted, the units are surrounded by a lack. Without seeing it can anybody give me any pointers.

Watch for turkey scratchings would be one thing I would recommend.  In the timber a bird hardly goes through without showing signs. 

Knowing the birds are there will keep you interested.  Not sure how big that area is, but going in and listening for them to fly up is another sure tell sign.  They are noisy getting into the trees.

I'll think of more, but a lot of scouting should give you some good ideas of where they are!

Scout for turkey sign . Set up in an area where a gobbler will want to be and call softly. Throw in a big dose of patience to wait out the silent birds and you will fill your tags when other hunters dont.

Scouting for sign , look along dirt road for tracks a lot of time you can pickup turkey sign around a mud hole. Just stomp out the gobbler tracks. I don't like vocal birds on public land because they equal hunters. If you can find where the hens like to hang out the gobblers won't be far.
