A Special Turpin Field Test

Finally getting a chance to head to the woods after another stent put in 3 weeks ago.  Cardiologist gave me the go ahead.  Plan on hunting 3 days with some of my old calls but will carry this one for a special field test.  I want to see how it works on some Old Mississippi Longbeards.  It is headed very soon to challenge some Old West Virginia Longbeards.  I used one of my last two pieces of Baby Doll walnut.  I was saving them for a couple of special calls for my vest, but got talked out of them for a Special Turpin and East of the Slash Cutter.  Here is the Turpin complete with top hat nails in the top hat like Mr. Turpin did.  It is set in a piece of Texas Ebony.

LT you know what the difference between a Mississippi Gobbler coming in to your calls,  and a West Virginia Gobbler?





     The Mississippi Gobbler has his head shaking and swinging to keep the mosquitoes off his head 

If you have never seen it, It is a sight to see.

Not many have seen the original Turpin Shortbox.  I guess that is why they go for so much.  Here is a picture of an original that my mentor let me use after he had a stroke.  I used it for 13 years.  He got it originally from Tom Turpin after WWII  and used it along the Mississippi River here in the Delta.  I wish this old box could talk.  You will notice that my mentor cut a hole in the handle.  He carried it in an old Army Issue Jacket pocket, with the leather lanyard always around his neck.   He did that so it would not bounce out of his pocket.  Glad he did.  It preserved a piece of history.
