Coal Legasy call set

As some of you know, I live and work in coal country WV.  There is a lot of controversy going on rite now with coal and issues but it has kept the nations lights on, cooked up a bunch of steel over the decades and provided good jobs for hard working folks (including me) for a very long time.  A good friend and fellow turkey hunter recovered an old oak rail tie from a 1920's era coal mine. The timber had some of the old spikes in it and was stained black by nearly a century of being submerged and buried.  There is no color added to the oak in this call set. It features a scratch box using padauk, beech and a curly maple sound board.  There is a slate over glass pot and the strikers are cherry and ironwood with more black oak, paduak, beech and elk antler in the top.  Also I thru a little black oak and curly maple business cared holder in the deal.  This desk set was left rough for a reason.  For those of you that might recognize it, the base is a black walnut header block.  Headers are used in roof bolting and a variety of other uses in the mining industry and is usually wood like poplar. The write up is a draft and still needs to be put in final format but you get the idea I think.  I was asked to create something using the rail tie for our local NWTF banquet auction which raises money 100% for our local kids. We have a summer fishing day, stock a local pond with catfish and feed them hotdogs/hamburgers and give them T shirts.  All free of charge and open to ANY kid under 17.  It is a hoot! It is a great cause and it was a real pleasure to do this to benefit our local youth and really get hands on with a piece of my local heritage.  Thanks for the look!

That is a beautiful set there you done a great job and a lot of thinking when you built that one. The new owner will have a real piece of history with that one.

Beautiful set and tribute to the heritage of mining in West Virginia LT.  Those header blocks get that name honestly as they will make you do a header when your hard hat catches one.   I've been there.
