Have you ever been fooled by a gobbler's gobble?
« on: December 07, 2009, 09:18:04 AM »
Just wondering if anyone else has ever been fooled by a shrill high pitch gobble, thinking it was a younger bird only to find out it was the Boss himself, saw this question posted on another forum and it got me reminiscing

I was one time fooled by a gobbler with a high pitch gobble. I was back from a field so never saw him while he was in the field. We had a little conversation, I told him I was the hottest little hen he ever met, and what I would do  if he would just come over and visit for a while, lol. Evey time I would say something, he cut me off with a shrill gobble, to me it sounded like there was a jake.
Before fly down I had done some soft tree calls, and had heard a mature bird boom out with a deep gobble so I was feeling really good about my setup. I could hear the birds when they flew down, and waited for a little while and then yelped, got cutoff by a good gobble. I waited and then did a cackle so he would think I was now on the ground. Then, I heard a strange and high pitched gobble. I remember thinking, there must be a jake with him and I could hear a bird coming my way fast.
Thinking  it was a jake, I got ready to shoot, but really didn't want to take a jake, so I wasn't fully committed. This gave the bird an immediate edge!
As soon as he entered the woods to where I could see him, I realized this wasn't any jake, and he gobbled, earsplitting and booming gobble that pretty much undid me. It was the same bird that I had hunted in this same spot the year before, and was the reason I had picked this spot to hunt. There a little pile of rocks from where a farmer had cleared his field, the previous year the bird had come in above it on the ridge, he used it so well for cover I never got a shot.Remembering that ,I had set up above it. This time, he came in below it. He stopped and studied my position.
My gun is up and getting heavier by the moment, I am having difficulty breathing and am shaking so bad I am afraid he can see the movement. He was well within range, but all I can see is his head and neck. I held on him as long as I could and was hoping he would take a few more step and clear that dang rock pile. He held, looking hard and began acting suspicious. I pulled the trigger.
What happened then was like a scene out of a matrix movie. I swear he saw the flame coming his direction from the muzzle of my gun, he pulled a twisting corkscrew maneuver the likes of which must have been rehearsed, totally avoiding every projectile heading his way, and flew off. I probably could have fired again, but just sat there stunned and watched him fly away.
I learned a couple lessons that day, one was to always be fully ready no matter what you think is happening, the other was to always carry my shooting sticks and use them!
My brother called that same bird in four times last spring, he should be a good 4 1/2 year old bird now, and he always managed to give my brother the slip. I think these birds are sometimes just psychic. He is very distinct looking from the rest of the toms in the area, his head is white as snow, my son says I took some skin off and that is his sun bleached skull, I don't really think so.
Anyways, hope I didn't bore you with my story, but I do know one gobbler with a shrill gobble and he is a nice one. I often wondered if maybe when they get excited their necks might swell a little more, like a buck deer or something, but your question got me thinking about that morning again!
Post script, on a hunt later that morning, I killed a very nice gobbler, so it turned out to be a great day!

I wish we had more stories like this one! I love to read other hunters experiences in the woods. It is always entertaining and informative.

In keeping with that, I was deer hunting once in south Alabama and there was no Fall turkey season. I was sitting on the ground watching a hollow when I see this Big Tom heading my way. I had an orange safety vest on. He walks directly in front of me at about 15 yards and stops, turns and looks at me and starts scratching and spittin like he is going to attack. I even quietly told him to get the heck out of there he was going ruin my deer hunt and he did this for a good two minutes. Then casually walked on his merry way as if nothing happened. I got back to camp and told my brother in law who was my hunting buddy and he thought I was lying. I went back to that area in the Spring to get that Bird and never even saw a turkey in that area. I was as shocked. Still am. Seen many Turkey while deer hunting and they get the heck out of Dodge ....except that one time. True story

Dave,

Great story. That is why we turkey hunt!!

Last spring we had a dominant bird on our place. I had hunted him a couple days and had him coming down a ridge at about 75 yds gobbling his head off. A hen ran between me and him and away he went after the hen. I went back into the area the next morning to set up and try to entice him off the roost. After I got back into this area and it started to get light, I hear gobbles a 1/4 mile behind me right where I had walked in that morning. I grab my stuff and make a beeline back to where the bird is gobbling. My only setup I can make is on the back side of a terrible briar thicket. There are some big white oaks on the other side of the thicket and this is where the gobbler has roosted. It is only about 100 yds from me. I start tree yelping and he answers. I quit calling and now the wait is on. I hear wings flap and I slap the ground with my hat and scratch the leaves around me. Then I hear another set of wings, and another, and another. He had roosted right with his hens. I could hear them beating their wings against some logs just on the other side of the ticket. I could hear them as they walked up and over the hill. Birds could not have gotten through that briar patch if they had wanted to.

I thought about the setup and decided to go back that afternoon and set up close to the trees they had roosted in. I cleaned me out a good area at the base of one of the big white oaks and would cluck and purr about every 15 minutes. I had decided I would wait there until dark to see what would happen. About 45 minutes before sunset I am sitting there enjoying nature. I had not heard or seen a turkey all afternoon. Suddenly I hear wings flap and I looked to my right down an old woven fence line and the gobbler has just flew up and over that fence and lands in the leaves about 60 yds away. He has his head down and is scratching in the leaves. His beard looks like a rope dragging the ground. All he has to do is come another 10 to 15 yds and he is a dead turkey. What does he do, he starts walking parallel to me straight up the hill. He has no idea I am there. I cluck at him and he stops, raises his head, and gobbles. Then he puts his head down and right up the hill he goes and out of sight. He told that hen if she wanted any of his action to come on. My son and I both hunted in this area most of the spring and took gobblers there, but not the Boss. He should still be there come this spring!!

I've never been duped by the higher pitch.  I can see how it could happen though!

I've got a new place I went to this last spring that is RIGHT by an interstate, and you want to talk about being fooled by the distance a bird is away from you!  WOW!   :o  I got my butt handed to me several times there this last spring.  Next year, I'm just going to pick my spots, get to them early, and stay sit, no matter what I hear where.

Rickey,

I dealt with a gobbler, just like that last spring.......Persnickity and always had hens with him.....First gobbler I can remember of, that roosted right with his harem.....every evening!!

Still out there as far as I know. I'll look into that later this spring....

I had a jake last spring, that fooled me the darnest. He had a FULL ROLLED Gobble! I had to laugh to myself, when I saw that 3" beard pointing straight out......

Great stories!!

I had an experience with several jakes on a scouting trip this past spring before the season.

I found the whole flock, about 6-7 gobblers and probably 15 hens, early morning when i hit the crow call. These gobblers were hot, and i couldnt resist talking to them. I heard over 150 gobbles that morning, and once they flew down (to the top of the mountain) headed up. Got to the top, hit the wingbone with some cutts and yelps, nothing. Then, 2 minutes later, BAM, about 60 yards off, several deep booming gobbles, i could have sworn they were 4 year old birds. I get set up, they come in, and what do you know, 3 jakes with barely an inch of beard on them, gobbling their fool heads off. I got these birds to gobble many, many times for over a half hour, each gobble sounding like thunder, until they finally walked off. That was just amazing!
