How to pull off ordering so many calls
« on: December 05, 2009, 11:34:15 AM »
Well as of lately, my wife has seemed to be more "interested" in what is coming in all the packages that come to our house.  In the past, I didn't have to come up with any catch phrases or say much at all.

So one day, I got to thinking how I was going to pull all this off.  It was like a light bulb went off.  The other day I tried it and to my amazement... it worked!!!

See this package was on our front porch when we pulled up.  My wife jumped up and ran over and grabbed it.  She opened the door, opened the package and there was a call.  I looked at her and said, dang Bruce...  I'm going to have to get him.  Next day, another box.  That box had Rickey's name written all over it.  She took hook line and sinker.  I told her it was a call that he had and the poor call maker wasn't going to make many more and it was a had to have item.

Then I decided all my cypress calls get blamed on Mr. Mimms since he loves that wood as much as I love Osage.

So how do you pull off hiding your calls?  She knows where the postman used to hide them out for me...  so that is out the door.  I never beat her home anymore, so that kind of stinks too.  I'm going to have to come up with new people to blame now though, she's not buying the Bruce, Rickey, or Mike reasoning anymore...  I'm thinking Zumer could through her for a loop in the meantime...  I do notice more and more, Bruce getting blamed for a lot.  That's how us fellow MO'ns work.  It is the Show-Me state  ROTFLMBO

Tomarrow I'll bring the truck down and pick all my calls up that you are storing for me. *up*I'm sure the storage fee is going to kill me.   I've got a better idea. Just have your wifes name put on all the calls and she'll think you love her so much that you by her presents daily ROTFLMBO ROTFLMBO ROTFLMBO. You should get some mileage out of that one for a while.

Mine does not even ask anymore. Just rolls her eyes and gives me one of those looks. I tried to explain to her this morning that "investing" in turkey calls will be worth a lot more than putting the money in the stock market or CDs, or........

I am trying to convince her that the Neil Cost call listed on ebay now would be a great investment. (Which it probably would be for real)

I was thinking the same thing.  Just with her surgery and all, right now is not the best timing... or I could say, hey dear this is how we are going to pay for your surgery.  Have to spend money to make money :)

I'm shocked ole augiedog hasn't added that call to his collection  ROTFLMBO

Well since I was unaware I should weigh in! I just play stupid, (which ain't too hard) and she buys. But she has now put her size 7 down! I may be stupid but she's not! No more calls!

Well, now you could always make your own calls.  *bannana*
Email all the major tool suppliers, Jet, Grizzly,Vic Marc,Powermatic, Nova ask them for catalogs. Start circling all the tools you will need, of course, cheap tools just wont do,they don't last and you will be replacing them, so start with Powermatic, Vic Marc, etc. You will need a Table saw, Thickness planer, Lathe (Maybe a couple of them) Bandsaw,Routers (Overhead pin router would be nice), Chop saw, Drum Sander, Belt sander, Thickness planer, Dust Collection system, Compressor, Drill Press, just for starters.
Next, you probably won't want to be making a mess out of the garage, after all, that is where she parks her car. ;D So you will have to begin the process of designing a shop, talking with an architect, getting estimates of materials and labor, site development, permit processes and fees, etc. Next you are going to need wood, exotics are best, so you will need a starting budget figured out for that, so email Gilmer woods, Bell Forest Products, etc, start circling all the wood you will need. You should be able to get all the tools you need for $30,000, building will be about $200 sq ft,depending on where you live, so for 20X30 shop you're only talking $120,000. It should be insulated, heated, storage racks, cabinets, ventilation and dust collection systems, bathroom would be nice too so you don't track dust into the house and she will appreciate your thoughtfulness. Wood should be bought about a year before you need it, so you need 2 years worth of wood to start, we  can budget say $200 for each type of wood, you can do the math on that, but $30,000 should get you some wood to start.
So far you have a capital investment of $180,000, (make sure the wife knows these are conservative figures, there are always incidentals). Make sure at this point she is also aware that the call cabinet full of collectible calls cost only a small fraction of that amount.  RkLu
It will be a year or so before every one in the country is asking you to make calls, so you will want to get ready. Spend every possible moment you can in the shop learning how to make calls, when you do get orders, people will want the best call money can buy. It should be so good they can just leave it in the woods, and when they come back, the game they are calling will be patiently waiting there for their return. ROTFLMBO Some call makers may have obtained that status, I'm still working on it but getting closer. *wha*
This might not be a good suggestion for everyone, but I think you really can save money by buying calls as opposed to making them yourself!  And, if she knows the alternative, she might agree.

Dave... I might add, don't tell that to the wife after she's hopped up on pain meds from surgery.  The look I just got, I don't think she thought the "alternative" was a very funny idea  ROTFLMBO ROTFLMBO

Women... so hard to please!!!!  I'm not quite at that spending level yet if I'd pull the trigger and start building calls.  Of course, I'd build the first square pot (not sure a pot would come round with me doing it) nor would a box look like a box :)
