Question on hand held GPS

Looking to replace a old hand held GPS
For a I.T. Ignorant person-
What's the easiest and best one on the market in you guys opinion -
Topi feature would be nice
Any advice or experience is appreciated

I like Tim's fancy GPS and I still use the same, but put me in the turkey woods and I always know where to go and don't need a darn GPS to get me close to that gobbler!

Furthermore, you need directions to the gate to watch them boys release the birds so ya know which way to drive your fancy buggie, heck, we all know you been hunting them pens too long in Florida, no wonder ya always go there alone

 Jeff, I have something better than a GPS, I'll give it to you, Ole' Buddy. In the early 70s I bought a device that hooked to my truck horn that would blow the horn for 3 secs. every 15 min. I used it when coon hunting to get back to my truck. I still have it.

 Have you ever heard 00 buck shot ripping through the trees at 2:00 A.M............ I didn't know there was a house 100 yds. from where I had parked my truck. The dogs treed so I went to them.

I'm surprised your "fancy buggie" as Witter called it, doesn't have a GPS built in... I guess the installed the turkey magnet instead.  Lucky for you they make after market GPS's, those turkey magnets are hard to find...

Seriously though, your phone is probably the most convenient solution.

I have Garmin Oregon 450. It's great. $400.

$30 apps on iphone works just as well. Google Earth is VERY powerful!

It depends on your application.  If you spend a considerable amount of time in the woods and want to be able to make custom routes i recommend you take a look at the Garmin handheld GPS.  

Specifically, I recommend the old Map60csx or the newer model 62s over the touch screen models. Pass on the units with a camera. They will drain your batteries and the photo quality is disappointing.  With the 62s you can add a micro SD card for expanded memory. You can also load third party hunting topo maps or make your own custom maps.

The learning curve with most units is about the same.  I can usually teach someone how to run one in an afternoon.  If you have basic map and compass skills you will catch on quick.  I am an old school compass user and advocate learning the manual navigation methods.  That said, advances in handheld GPS capabilities and mapping software have come a long way and are powerful tools.

There's also some decent GPS apps for your smartphone if you are always in an area with cell coverage. I personally find the dedicated handheld units more durable for hard field use.  

Google garmin 62s and you will find all kinds of video tutorials and reviews.

I got my first GPS last year a Garmin ETREX 20.. I basically wanted it for out of state to get back to the truck or mark birds when scouting or roosting.. It worked well, was easy to use and has more than enough features for me..
