All in a Dogs Day
« on: January 09, 2014, 09:10:34 AM »
This Bolivian Rosewood over Yellow Poplar sporting Zebrawood end blocks and Purpleheart accents was built for a co-worker's husband, specifically for his upcoming birthday next week.  They have 4 Labs and one, the leader of the 4 named Boulder, tips the scales at 97 lbs all muscle and as they tell me is an amazing duck/goose dog.  The wife said, put a dog on the call--okie dokie I said ;) ;).  Once again I never stop learning about callmaking and wood burning and here again, this was an excercise in resistance and priority...knowing what to do 1st and knowing when to stop.  I guess I could have gone further with some darks and lights, but as the image evolved I quickly realized the power of subtle shadowing and burn marks that give reality and depth.  This was yet another departure from the normal images I do and I really enjoyed the challenge.  In this case I decided to photograph the call before I put the finish on it, often I find that the finish masks some of the detail, so excuse the painters tape on the lid underside.
