Old Log Barn.

Went scouting for fall turkeys at a place I have hunted for years.  Locals call it the Witches Grave due to a so called Witch was killed on this farm a few centuries ago.  The farm is owned by a little old lady that was a friend of my Grandmothers.  This old log barn sits in the head of the hollow behind her house.  My guess is that it is over 200 years old and still standing.  Amazing craftsmanship.

I talked to the guy that takes care of the lady that owns the farm.  He says that the barn has 1863 carved over the door.  I missed that.  Next time I'll get a picture of that.

The joints are amazing and still strong.  This picture is rotated 90 degrees for some reason.



Not sure what the wood is but the patina is beautiful.  It's also very hard.



I'm wondering if it's Chestnut since it's still standing tall.

We don't have a lot of Hemlocks or any fir trees Chuck.
Chestnut was the dominant tree before the blight. It looked like it could be cherry but the age and patina make it hard to tell.

closed grain it may be cherry or maple I don't think its chestnut its a cool building anyhow thanks for the look

Lots of box calls could be made out of it if you could get to it.

Amazing I like to see old buildings like that in the woods it looks like it may be chestnut.
I also see a truckload of box calls right there.

That is very, very cool!  Looks like a great turkey huntin' cabin to me.   I love to find old stuff like that when out rattin' around. Fun to investigate.  Who knows what is buried in the corners or up in the loft.  For that part of the world, chestnut would be a good bet.  It was a very popular building material in that age.

Great pics Steve !!!That is an awesome old building. I built a 2nd floor on an old log house this summer I removed the roof and the rafters were fir   yep they make good calls the top logs I removed and saved they are white oak and I will be trying it out I will let ya know how it works. Here's a pic of the logs they are very tight, lightweight for oak but heavy for chestnut and still solid the home was built in 1850 I was hoping chestnut but its not and the area was full of chestnut at the turn of the century I had several loggers and woodworkers confirm that it is white oak Thanks for sharing the pics Steve
