                                                           Double Gobble

A little over a month ago Denny Emery asked if I would make him a twin gobbler box.  I said sure - we will call the new box  -  The Double Gobble.  So this new idea for me was put into one of my Stribling style boxes.  I can and often do put a gobbler on one side or the other in my Stribling boxes.  May not be the first out there, but this new double side gobbler yelping box is an all around Spring and Fall box.

In the fall it has that year and half gobbler yelp on the right side.  A wonderful call for busting up that young all gobbler flock with about 5 or 6 inch beards.  They tend to start off their yelp with a little high pitch drawn out yelp that gets into a deeper rasp yelp with a little hollow sound to it.  I have been very successful using this call in fall.

On the left side I put the old gobbler yelp.  I have been using this call very effectively in Spring to make those dominant birds mad.  I use it mixed in with yelps to get that old boy to move away from his hens.  I have been putting this call on my boxes for 25 years.  It is a deadly call for those old dominant birds in the Spring.  In that many years of fall hunting on the Mississippi, I have not found much of anything that works old birds with any consistencey.  Deep clucks on the gobbler side and patience at the bust up site is my best advise. This one has great deep gobbler clucks.

Just in time for your fall season Denny!

He is getting #1.  #2 is spoken for, but I plan on having a few made up for Nashville if you would like to stroll by the Mississippi Callmakers Booth #14.

Thanks for the look,

Mr. E

Yup, miss spelled Denny on the box, but will fix before mailing Mon.

Jeff, You know that is an understatment in more ways than one.  I know you are kidding and your #1 will roll off this ancient and worn out press soon.  I stare at part of your #1 every time I go into my shop.  It is a coming my friend.

You think about all the callmakers out there, past and present and what has already been done.  To come up with a novel idea, that kills turkeys or helps in the process,  is a Miracle.

Double Gobble is a miracle.  Why it has never been done before, I believe, boils down to one fact.  Most callmakers try to put every kind of call that has ever been made into one box.  CAN'T BE DONE.  I have been making calls for 26 years and hunting turkeys for about 46 (did not start till college days).  I tend to believe in giving them a box that they like.  What you find is there are certain birds that will be turned on by one particular turkey sound that will move his feet.  It may be a hen or a gobbler sound.  My hunting partner, of as long as I have been hunting, would say, "make me a box that does this, or make me a box that will do that."  He has been hunting them since childhood, and now has about 15 different boxes of mine.  All that will "Do This".  One opening morning, he came down from the lodge where we hunt in South Ms.  He was having trouble negotitating the narrow stairs from the upstairs bedrooms.  I told him, "You look like Santa Clause".  He said "That's because I have 5 of your boxes in this hunting coat."

This new box will serve a purpose both Spring and Fall, but you will need another one to compliment it.

Jeff, Before it all said and done, you my friend, will have enough Mr. E boxes to look like Santa Clause.  You can bank on that.

Mr. E

John

There was a fellow, Southern boy, by the name of Ben Lee, that made a double gobble box call many years ago. You don't see many of them these days and when you do, they fetch a pretty penny.

I like the looks of yours much better than Ben's, more compact, and it isn't surprising to see more hunter looking for a gobble box.

Congrats!  *up* *up* *up* *up*

I was not aware Ben Lee developed one.  Did his have twin gobbler yelps or do you know?   I figured there was one out there somewhere.  I guess us Southern boys think alike.  Still a #1 for me.

For sure Ben Lee's Double Gobble and Twin Hen were among his best box calls.
