Scratcher (Work In Progress)
« on: August 04, 2013, 06:45:29 PM »
Thousands of dots later, not sure progress is apparent, but I've about finished the birds.  Onto the other trees, shadows and grass, which will go a little more quickly.

This is a holly/ebony/ivory scratcher I've been working on (off and on) for several months. I've been scrimshawing for a couple of weeks, and I may finish it up next weekend.  I'm not done with either the striker or the box.  I switch back and forth when I get bored.  I just thought it might be interesting to see the scrimshaw in progress.  I'm sure they take shape a lot like the beautiful wood burned calls a few of the guys do here, except maybe a little slower.

I bought it from a local bead store for like 6 bucks a few years ago.  But Sandra Brady, who you'll easily find online if you search on her name and "scrimshaw," sells them with points for under $20, and you can't go wrong with her.  I own all of her DVDs, too.  Once you get a handful of points, they last forever.  If you don't buy the DVDs, you can be perfectly tooled up for scrimshaw for under $100, including a magnifying visor, the scribe, and some paint (I use high quality black oil paint, but some people prefer ink).

This picture has a dime in it to show scale.  If you get your points sharp/fine enough, you can really get a lot of detail. The pickup on the striker is smaller than a dime. And has everything to do with 1) the sharpness of the point, and 2) some magnification so you can see the small details. But I guess whalers, over 200 years ago, did it with a nail and no magnification, and they were they best ever.
