My trip to NC
« on: November 10, 2009, 07:39:58 PM »
Well, I used to live in NC for 11 years, ever since I got out of the Marines. I've been hunting this same farm in Martin County, on the Roanoke River since '92, and I go back every year for deer season, and turkey ever now and then when I'm not someplace else. I went last week from Wed. and came home Sunday. Didn't get a buck this year, but I did see ALOT of deer. Saw a momma Bobcat and her 3 babies, which was cool. It was all good. My buddy, who owns the farm, kinda has a rule (for some of us) that to shoot the bucks, they have to be at least as wide as their ears and at least 6 pts, which is fine by me. He really doesn't care if kids, or first time hunters shoot whatever. But those of us that have hunted there for a while have our own little pact on what we will shoot.

Anyways, I did see a real nice one my first night there, but it was pretty dark by the time he moved into the field and I couldn't and wouldn't take a shot, it just wasn't right. But he did have a nice rack. I did call one 7-pt. right to my stand from 275 yds. away using my cedar Ozark Custom Calls grunter. He marched straight to me, stopped every now and then. I would hit the grunt, and he would continue to walk. Anyways, I decided to pass on him, hoping for a nicer buck. I'm not trophy hunter by any means, but at this farm, I wanted to wait. Anyways, it was a good trip all in all. It always is, whether I get one or not. But, I did end up giving my buddy my cedar grunter that Richard (Ozark Custom Calls) made me. He never had (or seen) a custom grunt call before, and he just loved it, so I gave it to him. It was the least I could do. But I'll tell ya, when I got home Sunday night, I wanted to call and order another one IMMEDIATELY!!! I had to hold off until yesterday (didn't want to wake up Richard so late on Sunday, LOL!) ROTFLMBO. So luckily, I didn't have to wait and got another one coming right now. Gonna try it out this last week of bow season in NY.

Good story and Richards Grunt call is the best!
