Baby woodcock

It was a fine morning to pursue the wild turkey, and it started off with great photo opportunities.These are pictures of some baby American woodcock (Scolopax minor), also called the timberdoodle. They are so well camouflaged, and sit so still they are hard to spot, the mother was noticed first....She had three that I saw and were larger than I expected..at this stage they are vulnerable to predation and farm equipment.  If you notice a mother keep in mind her babies might be present.... The mother will not go far but will cry out to lure predators and other danger away from her babies....

Thanks for the comments! It was the first time I had ever seen any of the babies..they are pretty hard to spot they are so well camouflaged

Now that's something you don't see very often let alone get such a great photo.

We will keep an eye out for your little friend this fall when the flight birds stop in.  Love the upland hunting.
