It was foggy and drizzling this morning..and I wasn't sure if the turkeys would be gobbling...only one way to find out. Drove to a spot I had been to yesterday trying to locate a bird with a long box. Well..I stepped out of the vehicle and called with a trumpet...a gobbler hammered it with authority..game on!
I moved in a little ways and tried him again..it sounded like he had moved away...gave him the silent treatment for a bit..then tested him with the hen box..he went ballistic..played his game for a while..he kept moving back and forth and I thought for a while there might be two of them. He hammered every time I called...and then I played the silences trying to get him to come looking for me...it just wasn't working. He gobbled and gobbled but wouldn't commit.
Finally he drifted back and I decided to move. I went straight away from him then made a big circle to try and get to an area I thought he wanted to go.
A gobble let me know I was in good position and I moved up a tote road a bit closer...called softly with the hen box..he hammered it..scratched in the leaves and he gobbled at that. When he finally stepped into the old logging road..the game was over.
It was a grand hunt of almost three hours from start to finish...he gobbled just fine
