Well..it's been a great week of turkey hunting so far..Aaron tagged his second bird today. This bird fell in love with the old hen box..a Bulldog Mikey special. It's been a great call, and I feel like Mike is there with us for the hunt whenever I use it in the turkey woods.
Our first set up this morning didn't pan out..too many hens in with the gobblers..we had them coming our way..boss hen started cutting.. I guess we lost and she took the gobblers back. There was no way to reposition that I could think of. As we were waiting for things to unfold..we enjoyed a beautiful sunrise..three mallard drakes came over low..chuckling and jostling each other..cool to watch them at play like that. Maybe it wasn't play for them but a dominance issue..but we enjoyed it nonetheless. Geese were honking and a pair came low over our position...Aaron sitting there with his new Winchester as yet unbloodied..I could almost hear his thought process and I'm sure I felt his grin...
It was chilly and I felt the need to move..so we went on to another spot. We had one gobbling..but lost him. We tried a lateral move but that didn't work either.
We headed to the store, stocked up on drinks and snacks..and headed to another spot we had briefly scouted but hadn't hunted. I stepped out of the vehicle and heard a gobble! We geared up and headed in. The gobbler was in a cow pasture...inadvertently we spooked the cows and they ran down to the bottom where the gobbler was...
Well...shaking our heads we pressed on. We went uphill away from the pasture and circled back towards the bottom and set up.
I pulled out the hen box and called..was greeted by a gobble! Still there and game on..played the call and played the silences..soon I heard him coming..and coming fast. He was headed straight for me..I caught a glimpse of movement and he went behind a small pine and straight to Aaron...with barely enough time to react..Aaron did a great job shutting him down...there was a brief chase that ensued..but we got him!!
