Tennessee bird
« on: April 15, 2013, 02:00:11 PM »
It had been 2 days sense I have even heard a gobble. So Aubie and I went to Shelbyville yesterday and chased a few but was on brand new land and didnt know how it laid. Got back in my woods this morning after rain last night. Slipped in next to a green plot on the side if a ridge and waited. The morning greeted me with 3 longbeards and some jakes roosted together with the hens up the ridge higher from them. Began playing with them and they never really got fired up. They moved down the ridge gobbeling so so, away from the hen talk and stood their ground for a little while on a knob below me. I tried a little of everything at times --a box, a Jenkins glass, a Joe Slayton mouth call, and finally tossed in the Buice ironwood trumpet, and they hit. Threw it at em again real fast and it was on. They begain their move to me.....I had set out a strutter and hen, they got to the point they could see it, and it was a race to me. It ended fast when I saw them, but they sure got fired up at Billy's trumpet today.
