A double beard tom, for the grand son
« on: April 07, 2013, 07:25:45 PM »
Well, Saturday morning was windy as all get out for the youth season here in Mo. But we managed to here some birds early. No luck coming off the roost, but we managed to get on 2 toms late in the morning. Hayden and I got caught of guard, the woods are so open it is unreal. Seen them strutting at about 150 yards. Waited for the right time and just sat down by the closest tree along side an old ridge road. Made a few calls with the tube, they sure put on a show. Talk about trying a young hunters heart, it took 20 minutes of watching them strut and inching there way to us gobbling every 2 minutes . After a few stalls taking to show off for us, I got the old raspy cherry / glass, it was more than they could stand. I finally putted to break his strut at 30 yards, and he lowered the boom. It had 2-10 inch beards and weighed 23 lbs.  If I never kill another bird again, I will never forget that hunt watching the grand son shoot that old tom.  He is getting spoilt, 2 times hunting, 2 shots, and 2 gobblers.
