Absolutely this is American Chestnut and old for sure.  The grain is quite lose and not as tight as most I have seen or used, but if it's intact it could make some great calls I'm sure.  The value, priceless if you can build a few super calls with it.  I have a mess of American Chestnut and really old wood from a barn built in 1852, probably enough for 50 calls.  A blank for a short box is worth about $7 IMO.  Have fun with it and post some pics when your done.

it also looks old a and brittle to me you have work with and see if its ok sometimes its to brittle good luck

For sure Chestnut. Judging from its apperance, you  may have quite a bit of waste before you get into the good wood. Maybe as much as a 1/4" all the way around. Even still, it will make some awesome calls.

Kenny, you been sneaking on other people's property and tearing boards off their barns again? *peep*  Nice piece of old wormy wood oughta make a nice caller or two.
Price of wood is what the market will bring. In your case, any callers you make will way more than offset the cost of wood.

my short box in the competition this year was from chestnut (circa 1850),...i love using that stuff,..creates a great turkey sound,..especially the front end
