Sweet Gum Heart

Finished these two up tonight!...Boy was I surprised at how they sound!...They sound so good (to me) I think im gonna hunt with them this year!...The lacquer made the grain jump out too!
Has anyone made calls from sweet gum? I never thought about sweet gum before...A friend of mine brought some boards to me, told me it came from some huge sweet gum trees that he took to the saw mill...well, i just had to make A call out of it...I was very suprised at the sound too!...I did notice that it warped pretty bad though.

Really sharp looking work there. I got a truck load of sweet gum not long ago. Still needs to be cut up and dried but it has lots of mineral stain in it. Hope mine looks as good as yours.

It takes a big gum tree to have heartwood large enough to get useable "red gum."  I have made a couple of dozen scratch boxes from it over the years.  I am presently working on a couple of red gum calls for a customer.  I must admit that it is pretty wood and finishes well, but it is far down my list of favorite woods when it comes to calling turkeys.

I have a pile of sweet gum sitting here to cut up. What about it don't you like? If it doesn't make good turkey calls it might become grunt tubes or duck calls. How is it for pots? Never used it but saw a tree crew cutting some so I grabbed it.

I only make scratch boxes, so I don't know about other calls, but it lacks the desired tone for scratch boxes.  I can make a scratch box out of it that will call turkeys,all right, but I just never had one to sound just like I really want it to.  My advice is to cut it up and try it.  Good luck!
