What is the fascination with the Thunderdome calls?
« on: January 19, 2013, 06:17:56 PM »
Here's the link to the latest one that sold on ebay.  Someone explain the prices they are fetching?  There was another that sold for $216.

They are a good sounding call that hasn't been made in years. I sometimes carry a Crystal Thunderdome in my vest and have another still in the package.

I've never run a slate. I wish that Lohman or whoever bought them would start making them again.

Dang!!!!  I had several back in the day myself and gave some away and threw one or two out with the trash.  I thought they were average at best.  Hated the bottom as I dented/caved one in by sitting on it.  I'll have to keep my eyes out for them.

Lou,

I have two of the slate Thunderdomes. One looks like new and one and has a pin head size dent in the bottom aluminum. I paid $19 delivered for the last one. I guess if someone just has to have one I would let one or both of them go for the same price the recent one sold for on ebay.  *lol*

A couple of fellas over on another forum debated that same question last year, and I had a good friend made me one real similar like, by using a soda can bottom as the bottom dome part, and its a singer!!  You can get loud with it by using a carbon striker ( hollow arrow shaft ) or get real small and quiet with it by using a wooden striker, this one was slate over slate, and I'm gonna use it some this spring, althogh I dont want to dent it up, its a real keepsake cause it came from him, and it LOOKS real fine !!

I think I have a couple of the slate ones around somewhere.  I do know one has the bottom dented pretty good.  I just thought of it as custom tuned! *peep*  At those prices, I mite better go dig thru some boxes... :D

LT, they came with a thin hollow carbon striker.  But I run my Crystal Thunderdome with a Locust striker.

I have a buddy that used to use em and has a few still in the package in slate. I made one for him in that style out of wood and he loves it.....
