AR suggestions?

I am wanting an AR rifle. I am looking for any suggestions on brand, barrel length, caliber, etc. I would also like to be able to deer hunt with it. Thanks in advance for any information you guys can give.

 For a .223, I like Rock River. For deer, I have a DPMS in 30 AR, that is an absolute tack driver. There aren't any unprimed brass manufacturers available, but the Remington factory ammo is very good. Once fired brass, can be reloaded and I do, w/ Barnes bullets. The 110 gr. TSSX is coming out the barrel at over 3100 fps and is deadly. With 150 gr. bullets, you can get 308 165 gr. velocities in the 30 AR. DPMS also does an upper for the 6.5 Creedmoor but you need a AR 10 lower. This is also a great deer round and in the AR 10 platform is a tack drive.

I think I would get a lower and build what I want. I know for deer the one thing I would not shoot is the 223. I am a huge fan of that caliber but it will cost you deer I promise, seen it happen too many times. Before someone says I don't know the 223 I have shot thousands and thousands of rounds through them using all types of bullets and done penetration tests so I do know what they will do and more importantly what they won't. For varmits it is my all time favorite caliber. The 30 AR from what I have heard is just bad medicine all the way around I would look at that.

Heavy barrel maybe 18" and then add all the furniture that you like. That is the good part about black guns they are the adult version of Legos.

 Don't get a 223!  I've seen too many deer tote that bullet. Took a couple of frustrating seasons before a good friend of mine, figured out that the 223 wasn't a good deer caliber. Especially, if you make a margianal shot. No room for error at all.  Do the deer a favor, and get a different caliber.  Gary

If you are going small caliber make sure you get a barrel marked 5.56 NATO and not .223.  It can handle the higher pressure rounds.  Check out LMT, Lewis Machine & Tool they do a lot of military work.  Get the standard 16" barrel, if you want a heavy target barrel, buy a bolt action rifle.  I believe anything shorter than 14.5" requires a short barrel SBR permit.  The 6.8mm SPC is a great round in between 5.56mm NATO and 7.62X51mm NATO that makes good work of pigs and deer.  I have seen deer and hogs go down with 5.56/.223 but they were head/neck shots on smaller animals.  If you are going into battle for bigger bucks or boars, you are better served bringing something a little bigger.  There is years worth of info. on the AR-15 forums out there.

I'll second that,  just bought a new LMT (Lewis Machine & Tool) a few weeks ago.   Top notch in my opinion.   A few others that are great guns are Daniel Defense and Bravo Company.

 Never took interest in an AR but I do know for sure if I was going to deer hunt with it the 30 would be my first choice and 6.5 second.

I got a DPMS 16" carbine AR-15.It shoots 5.56 and 223. I love it. With the the right ammo they will kill a deer. But u must pick your shots. I think the 6.8 SPS AR or 300 Whisper or the 300 Blackout AR Calibers would be a better choice for deer. My AR did the trick for my 12 year old daughter. plus a friend niece took a deer with his AR at 200 yards. My daughter deer was 109 yards out. That small 223 Polymer tipped bullet did some damage to. Her deer only went 30 yards after she shot.

One more thing. If u do get the AR-15 5.56/223 rifle u can buy different uppers in different Calibers to fit your hunting needs. AR-15's are fun. Call me and I will tell u all about my AR-15.
