New Callmaker Book Comin'..
« on: October 15, 2012, 11:03:22 AM »
Hello all!
First off, to answer your question, "Where the heck have you been?!".. I want to say everything is fine here..Fact is I just needed to re-connect with family and take care of a ton of stuff I brushed aside through last spring season.. Thanks to those who reached out to me. I promise I won't fall off the earth for so long next time.

News is that someone new has stepped up and decided to publish a new book of call makers. I got word of it via Facebook, and I spoke to him on the phone and he said he wanted me to put the word out since he's not a member of this forum.

His name is John Hood, and he himself is a call maker. He's a 'younger' guy, and he's only been making calls for the past 2 or 3 years, but like us all, he's very passionate about his art.
And the way he's going about making his book is something new as well. Basically he's letting the callmakers fill out their own biography sheet and submit it with one profile picture of the maker, and up to three pictures of their calls. Big change from how Mickel did his books..No personal interviews. In this way the book will be factually accurate, since all text will be directly provided by the call makers. He does have a few stipulations...He will not accept any calls made on a CNC machine and nothing with pre-made molded parts. Also, the book will be a mixture of waterfowl and turkey calls..No deer grunts, predator calls, etc. He also wants to include as many "little guys" as possible, including part-timers and hobbyists.
He's hoping to collect as many call makers as possible before the end of this year.. His target publication date is sometime in March, 2013.

Here is is contact info..

I had heard this guy was wanting the person to send him a call(s) to go into a traveling call collection to be displayed at conventions and shows.  ????

Here's what he says in his e-mail... I think he's flexible on that subject.
If anyone has any questions about this I highly encourage you to contact
John personally via his e-mail.

"At least one call must be mailed to me no later than January 5th 2013.
Each call that is shipped will stay as a book set and be put on display
at hunting shows and outdoor festivals.  I have had several call makers
join in this effort that also make decorative calls that have over 100 hours
in a call.  If this is the case or if you have a call you would like to be
pictured but don't want to part with you can e-mail me a picture as long
as I still get at least one call to be put on display.
E-mail the picture in a different e-mail with subject line of call picture
for collector book.  Please also give me a detail discrpition of the call."

Hello

My name is John Hood.  I am the call maker that is working on the book.  NCBigShot has helped alot by posting this for me and it was a pleasure talking to such a nice gentleman on the phone the other night.  Anyways he told me I might want to join and explain a little about the book.  At this time I am pushing 125 callmakers on the list.  I am asking at least one call be mailed in that will stay as part of a complete book set.  Yes that means the call maker will be sending a "free call".  I have a great deal of respect for all callmakers and I am truly doing this to try and help bring recognition to the hobby.  What people do not realize is the time that goes into taking on such a big project.  So far I have over 100 hours in sending and reading e-mails.  I have two seperate spreadsheets going to help keep everything organized.  Like most thinks in life nothing is guaranteed but every call maker has my world that I am working as hard as possible on this project and if it fails I will send each call back to the call maker.  My reputation means everything to me and I will not take advantage of anyone.  A little background about me is I am 28 years old, married, two boys (4 & 5mo), work as a paramedic, vol. firefighter, eagle scout, and enjoy anything outdoors.  If you have any questions feel free to ask.  Thank you for your time, John Hood

This looks like a good deal for those callmakers that are not included in any of the Mickel books.

What about crow or "locater" type calls? Do those fall under turkey stuff?
Thanks,
Mark

Thank you for the the question.  I wish I could offer a book for each call maker but money wise it just is not possible for me to do so.  I have a wife and two small children and working as a paramedic money is very tight right now.  Thank again, John Hood

Yes crow calls are considered part of turkey hunting and are going to be allowed.  Send me an e-mail at john@lowercreekgamecalls.com and I will get you the additional information about the book.  Thanks, John Hood
