Jeff is currently making calls for this bird now in his spare time, they have added a new category at Nashville for this bird and Jeff wants to be the first to get a ribbon in this category

no matter how much R & D   I do,
the things that make this call what it is, seems to keep comming up. The design and functionality,the sound,and the way it is designed, just lends itself to be useful in this endeavor. To those that have attempted to make it successful in the past, sorry , but I have found the CORRECT use for the design.......let the ribbons follow

That call has the right sound and break to imitate that strutting grouse.  You NAILED it Jeff, Oh yea there is a nail and not a screw in the hinge on that call

Capercaillie are the world's largest grouse.  They were once common throughout Europe, but because of deforestation are now reduced to mainly Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.  A friend of mine shot one in Romania and has it mounted - about the same size as a turkey hen.  You cant call them in guys, so scrap the new call designs and cancel the plane tickets!  You hunt them like the old time days of turkey roost hunting.  They give mating calls from the tops of conifers and you shoot them with a small bore rifle.

I talked to a gentleman who hunted them last year in Russia. He said it was pretty intense. Basically a stalking situation in heavy dense old growth forest. They do make some sort of sound and that is partially how you find them. If they make a call...then it is only logical that the RIGHT call will call them in.  I think someone needs to work on this....

It "dont" work like turkeys.  They breed at certain times on certain areas only, called Leks, that have sometimes been in the same spot for decades.  Single cocks dont go to single hens, so the "right" call is no call at all.
