MY OLD DOG

OPENING DAY of the nc dove season,my old lab Kathy is now 14 years old, and decided this would be her last hurrah,got her as a puppy and immediately knew she was a winner ,sometimes you get that feeling when you pick a puppy out of a litter ,she has hip problems cant see very well,and is in slow motion most of the time,but when i started to get things rolling ,she knew it was dove season, her ears perked up ,she wanted to go really bad ,so kennelled her up off we went.what can i say except that she did a fantastic job on the retreives that where there ,though my shooting could have been a little better,at times she would look up to me as to say CANT YOU SHOOT! she really started to limp after about an hour of retreiving birds ,so that was it, i carried her to the truck and she seemed fine with that ,when i got her home, i medicated her and rubbed her hips and legs ,all the time thinking what great times weve had in the field, and all the numerous ducks ,geese, and doves she found for me and other hunting buddies,she will be truley missed, but take heart, ive got a 2 year old thats just about right, bear is his name and i hope he can fill her paws, the legacy continues,thats for all you guys who know where iam coming from,rick

You hate loosing a good friend. Reminds me of when I had my Chessie. I never did take her bird hunting though we did hunt tree rats a few times and she really liked that. I only wish I fall hunted turkeys then as I think she would have done well. Sorry for your loss but it sounds like there's plenty of great memories.

from what I am reading, she ain't dead yet!  My yellow lab Sullivan is 13 1/2 and I hope mine and yours go peacefully!

Charish these last times and memories. My lab passed away a couple of summers ago.  Had her 14 years. I still miss her so much. Your posting brought back some fine memories and a whole lot of tears.    Gary

Rick: i know exactly what your talking about. Myra and i have had 17 dogs in our lives. all but one was a hunting dog. my old shorthair Morgan is 16 now and struggles to get around. she went on her last turkey hunt when she was 12 or 13 and we killed a young gobbler. i was just looking at the picture the other day and thinking about all the good times we had together. several of the folks on this site have hunted with her and will share the same memories.

I know exactly where your coming from. Mine is now 8.5. He still hunts hard but is slowing down a little and is getting hard of hearing. His heart will never stop wanting to get after it. I'll probably have to carry him. Now that he is getting up in age, I've been telling myself the time is coming trying to prepare for when it does. He loves to go though, and when the Lord calls his name, Im going  to cremate him and spread his ashes all over our marshes.
