box call made with pine

Has anyone made a Box call out of Pine. i found some Pine that they took out of a building that was built about 1890. I found out the the building was built in 1878 and wis the first 3 story building build in Boscobel, Wisconsin. Boscobel is the Turkey Hunting capital of Wisconsin.

I have a call that the box was made out of heart pine. Some of that stuff is hard as a rock. I had a well known hunter/collector tell me one of the finest sounding calls he ever used was made out of pine.

This wood seams to be soft. I got enought to make about 4 calls, i am going to see if I can get some more out of the pile.  A lot of the wood has the square nails in it.

Yes. Might be neat to leave some nail holes showing. Made a few calls from a 1900 built home in red oak used for lath nailers. Left a streek of nail holes in the center of each piece used. Gave them the name: (Old Nailer) and gave 2 to the new owners of the home. Kept 2 of them for my collection. That old wood was awsome sounding!

Jim, I have made short and long boxes out of Sugar Pine from the Millersburg Ferry here in Pa. they rebuilt the two ferry's back in 1999 and I decided to try it and it worked very good !! Best of luck with your pine
