Can you identify call type by sound alone?????
« on: August 19, 2012, 03:28:27 PM »
I made a few clips outdoors from 30 to 50 yards away from my camera to get a better feel for how different calls sound to turkeys. I have always thought the best calls and callers made it difficult to identify the call type. A great call in a great caller's hands sounds more turkey and less like a box, pot, mouth call....etc. Mine are unfortunately still a little more easily identified. If you want some ideas of what not to sound like, take a listen to these clips and see if you can pick out the different call types. More importantly, I would like your opinion on which ones sound the most realistic. If none of them do I need to know that also so I can go back to square one.

Rickey was right. You do run all types of calls very well.
My guesses
1. Short box
2. Pot call
3. Mouth call (diaphram)
4. Scratch box
5. Long box

1. Box call
2. Kenny Morgan Friction wood, part with a peg striker and part with the block for striking. I was leaning towards a push pin until about the 140 mark. That yelp is unmistakable if you have ever run a friction wood.
3. Mouth call
4. Scratch box
5. Box call

First, my guess is you kill a lot of turkeys, why, cause you runs calls, all types very respectable you have a good knack/feel.  My only critique is that your rhythym and cadence is sometimes a bit too regular and you hit the same nunmer of notes/yelps too often, but please this is only being picky and telling what I believe you really want to know.
  • 1. long box and it has a great tone
  • 2. friction, but I can't put my finger on the precise type
    3. mouth call and it sounds good
    4. scratch box and it sounds very good
    5. long box call and it sounds again
    6. slate pot call

Thanks, Scott. You are exactly right. Listening to them I thought it was monotonous. Intentionally, I wanted it to be simple for sound comparison, but my yelp sequences are too predictable for sure. Good advice. I'll make a fancy calling clip sometime. I bet you could guess where that long box come from.

I think you sure blew away the myth that longboxes are only for locating. I know the one well you were running in clip #1 and that is one awesome call. Your calling is sure not half bad either. I could not tell what type call you were using in soms of the clips. That is a real compliment to the calls and you.

Truthfully, I'd be happy to sit in front of you on a hunt anytime--with my gun up of course *bannana*.  I do have a good notion who's long box that is--sounds dang good too!  You may also been influenced by making a video...they're are not easy and your calling I suspect when actually hunting may sound different and even better I'd imagine.  I did like how you give a good rise and fall to your sequences and out of all of the video clips I thought the scratch box, the glass pot and the short box were the most realistic.

I think we all forget we were killing turkeys when the callers were as not as good as they are today AND our calling. I would have never continued ( or got started ) as a turkey hunter if the turkeys were "Judging" may caller and my calling skills.

The greatest thing that levels the playing field is the Turkeys. It allows the Turkey to be the final judge. Let's face it. The majority of turkeys killed are not from the best callers and calling experts.

What is important is the Great callers we have has and will continue to put pressure on the Mass Produced call makers. The gimmick game is over pretty much and running to Bass Pro for example for the Caller you saw on TV is not working like it did. Bubba might not be the sharpest stick in the pile....... but he has learned the next greatest thing trick is with both eyes open. That is why the sales of mass produced callers continue to go down and custom callers are going up.

The popularity of Trumpet callers did not come from the Big Box or Big Boy call companies for example. So times have changed and in my view is better for the turkey hunter.

IMHO....... we as turkey hunters are able to have a Variety of callers to choose from to see what the Turkey likes. Collectively we have brought callers back like the scratch box and use them with great success. Calling skills will vary...... but I do think we have better callers and it reflects in our success.

The best way to improve your calling is to take a recorded sound from an actual wild turkey and mimic that over and over. Then you can record yourself and  be your own judge of your calling.

If a caller makes a couple of calls it can fool us....... is that a Turkey? If the hunter keeps calling most the time we can pick out it's a hunter and not a turkey. But we have had turkeys come to us "thinking" it was a hunter calling badly......... and be a real turkey....LOL Which means even Turkeys are bad callers at times *up*

GSLAM95, #2 is a Kenny Morgan frictionwood caller that doubles as pot call and a scratchbox. The first half is with peg striker in pot call fashion and the second part is using it as a scratch box. #5 is the same long box as #1 but in the woods. You nailed the others.

Good suggestions, Dr. I also agree it is a great time to be a turkey hunter. The custom callmakers keep raising the bar. I am very excited to see more choices in scratch boxes, wingbones/trumpets and tube calls. Lots of fun to learn and very effective on turkeys.
