TO'd in NC w/ nice double beard
« on: April 27, 2012, 06:47:08 AM »
Went hunting with my buddy yesterday and we set up right on a creek.  We got set up around 6:15 and saw some hens and never heard much until around 7:00.  I had been playing a trumpet call and switched to my new Bill Lyman Glass call and when I did, one hammered a good ways off.  About 5 minutes went by and one flew out of nowhere and was strutting about 80 to 100 yards down the creek.  He would gobble every once in a while but didn't seem interested in coming.  I was trying to figure out what to do, when I hear gobble on the opposite side of the creek.
It sounded to me like a jake had come in and wanted to play, he was about 80 yards and not moving, so I gave him the silent treatment and he couldn't stand in, he moved closer and I was trying to catch a peek at him when he all of a sudden flew across the creek.  There was a nice grassy bank on the other side and I thought he would come down it, but didn't.  Probably 5 minutes went by and I picked the call back up and gave him a few soft yelps and he was standing in some cypress trees at about 30yards.  He made the wrong move and 20ga rolled him.  I had to swim the creek, but it was well worth it.  He had a 11" main beard & 9" thin one, 1-7/16 & 1-5/16 spurs, my best bird so far.  Thanks again to Bill for letting me get that glass call!

Dandy bird for sure. Congratulations *cheers*
