The "Real Slam"

With the property that I hunt being at a death's door due to floods, I hunted different places this year in hopes of finding a few birds.  Well I got the real slam this year. Called in and shot the biggest coyote that I have ever shot, when my Ala. bird shut completely up the second morning of that hunt.   Came back to Ms. and could not get on a bird here until this past Mon. AM.  called up two very late hatched two year olds(Due to the spring flood two years ago). They worked great and when they stepped out at 40 yards, it became a question of whether the beards were 6 inches or not.  I passed them up feeling sorry for them, and moved to a crossroads where a big head was seen the week before.  Sat down and yelped up and shot a very healthy bobcat about 10:00.

Finished my season on a hunt with my son at a farm where he had permission.  We went to a corner where some birds had been coming out.  Heard a bird gobble over in the woods after flydown.  I got real aggressive with a short Turpin gobble box and my cutting call.  My son says,  "There's a man on this treeline to my right and he he fixing to shoot your stutter.  I yelled, "Please don't shoot my decoy, I just paid $80 for it."  My son said he went high tailing it down the tree line--- so I passed on that shot.

Over all it has been a fun, but unusual season.  On a bright note, the Mississippi is down and a flood is out of the picure.  Should see a bumper crop of poults on the river this fall.

Maybe things will get back to normal in the Delta after a couple of good hatches, John.
I think we will have a great hatch this year in NE MS.  That will be two in a row.  I'm praying for three in a row!  The improvement in hunting that three good hatches can bring is almost unbelievable!

I think I told you when you were here last that my honey hole was being clearcut.  Now it has all been laid to waste.   *aah* Got two there before they finished, though.  It amazes me how a bird as nervous as a wild turkey will stay so close to a logging operation.  The second one I killed there was within 100 yards of a parked skidder one Saturday morning!

I have decided not to try to sell any calls during turkey season next year.  Hunting at 5 AM then working all day and coming home to fill call orders until 11 PM or sometimes midnight is hard on an old man!

Guess I am too old school and don't have the newest phone with a camera.  Usually don't even take a camera, as I feel I am carrying too much stuff as it is.  If my son is along he usually gets a picture with his phone, but he wan't when the damage was done.  -  Wife says she is getting one of new ones soon, so next year hope to carry one with the phone.
Coyote was biggest of the three that I have shot and the bobcat was more grayish with very few spots, but bigger than the first that I shot about 10 years ago.  This one was health and looking around in the grass for the turkey he just heard.
