2nd Shannon County Bird is special
« on: April 24, 2012, 03:50:16 PM »
Steve Lumma had a chance to come visit this weekend. Saturday morning wasn't productive as far as feathers flying but we got to see some nice country.

This old cedar snag may have a caller or two in it ;D

We had a good visit at camp Saturday afternoon. Mr Dan Searcy, Doug Conway, Steve Lumma, Paul Lawson, and Clifford Rainbolt and his grandson Austin.

Steve happened to bring me something I ask for a while back. He has been giving me pointers for some time now. When I seen it I was blown away. I never expected something so fancy. I told him I was going to exclusivly use it to kill my next beard nomater how long it took.

Well it didn't take to long. Right at 3 hours to be exact. I called this bird across a steep holler along with a hen. I couldn't of ask for a better hunt. I set up on a bird and either a coyote or bobcat shut it up. I seen it but couldn't tell exactly which it was. This bird (the second one) was across a deep holler. I got up and slipped about 30 yards and called soft over the break of the ridge and went back to my spot and waited. In about 15 minutes the bird had crossed the holler and was strutting, spitt'n and gobbling 30 yards behind me and behind a pile of cull logs in a log deck. I got finally got flopped around and he was there for over an hour. Finally I seen a hen come out behind the logs and in a few minutes he was right behind her. He put on a good show at 20 yards. His back was to me most of the time but after a few minutes I couldn't take it. We looked eye to eye and the lord called the poor thang home.

Congratulations David! Funny that we had just discussed hunting with yelpers last night. Well done. Great looking trumpet 2.

Thanks Rickey
I'm not much of a guide. I don't even make a good chauffeur. About all I can do is point in the general direction. But you are welcome to come for a visit. I enjoy going.

There's a lot of good trumpet makers out there. I have took a hanker'n for some. I have 5 now that I think are something special. Not to take away from anyone elses work but now I'm partial to this particular one. I have practiced on the trumpet Steve brought me last year trying to learn how to play good enough to take one to the woods. This trumpet is now retired and holds a special place in my memories. I didn't figure I'd use much of anything except one of my own long boxes but the sound these trumpets make are a complete change up to the birds and will hold a place in my hunting tatics from now on. Lumma has spoiled me big time. I hope you have good luck up north. Stop in for a vist if you have time.

Good job, David. You can give me a few more lessons on that trumpet and maybe I can call one with it too.
