Broadening my Horizons
« on: April 17, 2012, 09:33:02 PM »
Hey guys,
After a long few months of banging out box calls, I've been filling some time developing some new calls. I've been making a few of these calls for a while but never really put much attention into them and I've focused primarily on my box calls.  The owl hooter and cane yelper were just made in the past few weeks as I was looking to a way to fill my vest entirely with my own calls.  I've always used an owl hooter, either the barrel style or "hoot tube" style and decided to make one for myself.  I must say that I really like the sound that came out of this call.  The cane yelper was more of an experiment that turned out surprisingly well.  I've never made any type of yelper (other than a tree yelper or wingbone) and had some cane laying around so I began playing around with it.  The thread wrapping is really a tedious process but definitely adds to the look of the call.  I started making tree yelpers about 2 years ago just playing around on the lathe and really like the soft talk that comes out of them.  And scratchboxes take me back to my roots.  Before I even started making box calls, I began experimenting with scratch boxes.  I've made many different styles of scratch boxes but I'm pretty happy with the sounds I get from this design.  As a callmaker, its always fun to experiment and try to come up with something different than what your used to making.  I hope you enjoy them.

Ed, They all look real good and congrats on expanding your product line.  I am a fan of cane yelpers and the tree yelpers are something I have never tried.  I am sure they all will see field time this spring with you and your Dad.  Good Luck with them!!!!! *up*

Thanks guys...I love experimenting on new calls and trying to improve others. I've been throwing around a lot of ideas on some new designs, these are a couple of them.  I really appreciate the kind words, hopefully some of these will be in on some kills this season!!

I've had the chance to listen to all these calls and they are awesome. Great work Ed and I'm sure there will be some dead birds as a result.
