3 dead Rios in Kansas
« on: April 16, 2012, 06:38:15 PM »
I came home a day early from Kansas after hearing tornado warnings on the radio.  I killed one big gobbler and called in 2 more for my buddy Mike.  These were the first Rio Grande birds for both of us and we are now 3/4 of the way to our grand slams.  Mine ended up being the biggest and thankfully since I missed one the day before.  On the day I killed it we started off in a blind because the weather forecast was all day rain.  At about 6 am a coyote started barking not 80 yards from us and that fired up all the gobblers in the area.  Luckily we were set up right in the middle of all the roosted birds.  After flydown they all ended up in front of the blind with our decoys.  I shot the closest gobbler, 21 lbs 4 oz, 11 inch beard, 1 1/8 spurs.  The snakewood trumpet was deadly the entire week, making several Toms do a 180 and leave their hens on many occasions.  Now I'm back home in Wisconsin and will be hunting more later this week.
