paul's calls - wood combinations?

Hi Folks - While I've been chasing gobblers for some time, I'm new to this site and new to custom calls as well.  Most of my hunting over that past 20 years was limited to mouth calls.  Last year I purchased my first custom box call from a fellow in Georgia; it is a field grade call with a mahagony box and walnut paddle that I'm quite pleased with.  I'm looking to add another short box to my arsenal and have decided to go with Albert Paul.  While I plan on chatting with him about wood types and their associated tonal quality and pitch, I'd be interested in getting some feedback from folks who own and hunt with an Albert Paul call, and what wood combinations you have.  Also, I tend to like medium pitched raspy calls; it seems that these days many folks are opting for higher pitched calls.

So let me know what kind of Albert Paual wood combinations you've had success with in the woods.

     I have a few calls from Albert.....

     My advice is call Albert and talk w/ him about the sound your looking for......He'll know woods to use to get the sound your looking for... *up*

His,Poplar with a walnut lid/base is a real KILLER !!!!

The one I like most from him is.. Walnut/Cedar...

Welcome Greg.  I don't own one of his calls but heard a great one in Nashville.  Persimmon and Maple lid, that was a great sounding call.  Good luck with your selection as Albert is one of the best and a real fine gentleman to talk too

I have not run an Albert Paul call I did not like. Great callmaker and finer gentleman. Call Albert and tell him the sound you want and he will fix you up. I am planning on using a Walnut over Catalpa short box from him some this spring. It has that older, mature hen sound I like.

Thanks for the feedback fellas...I will most certainly heed everyone's advice and speak with Mr. Paul.  Walnut/cedar, poplar/walnut sound very interesting; and persimmon/maple is a combination I would have never thought of, which is precisely why I asked. 

While I have an idea of what I think a turkey call should sound like, at the end of the day, if it brings in birds, I'll use whatever works. That's why I'm interested in learning about what other folks have success with.

I have many of Mr. Pauls short boxes......the first I bought is still in my vest purchased it In 2003 ....poplar and walnut....since I have acquired many more....several of which are from woods I personally selected from my own stock....

I played the persimmon call of which you speak... it is excellent....so I arranged for it to be mine....when he is through with it..... ;D

the more you play the call the better it gets.....soon you do not need any chalk....my poplar and walnut is better today that it was when I bought it...

One thing I have done many times, is have the call maker PLAY EACH call over the phone and see if one has the 'Sound" that my ears like.  He does not sell callers at shows but will have them at home. I also played the Persimmon and Maple at the show and it Spit Feathers RkLu
