Mulberry

Anybody ever tried this in a call? How did it work out.

We don't have this wood down here in Mississippi, but a friend of mine in IL just cut a couple from behind her barn and would like for me to build a call or two out of it. I would be happy to try, but I don't want to put her through the trouble of shipping the stuff down here if it is an effort in futility from the start. Any help?

Mulberry is a cousin of Osage Orange. It has a yellow color and a coarser grain. I have made a few decent strikers  from it and put up a piece of crotch wood today for future use. I have seen some nice calls made from it.

It can work great , but it is hard like osage and can be tough to get good vibration in the sides .Can make a good lid too.

Here is a long box made by Don Clark that turned out nice using Mulberry.

Where are you in MS, Ken?  We have some mulberry here in Northeast MS. I have built scratch boxes from it, but it is pretty hard stuff and really not much to look at.

I'm in Brandon, Tom. Just about smack in the middle of the state.
We might have a little mulberry around here, but I wouldn't know what the tree looked like if I bumped into it and raised a knot.  I know a good bit of our native flora, but there are still some that I don't. I just don't recall anyone around here referring to one, unless they are called something else down here.

I have made a few short boxes out of mulberry and they turned out nice I think IMHO it is easier then osage to make a good call from  ;)

I have made some boxes out of mulberry...turned out pretty good...but in my opinion it makes better bows than it does turkey calls.

I know all about Mullberry.. the berries are awesome and it's almost as good as Osage... almost  ROTFLMBO
