Wood Lathe Collet Systems
« on: February 14, 2012, 09:09:29 AM »
I was wondering if anyone on here has had any expreiecne with either the PSI or the Beall Wood Lathe Collet chuck systems??  I have been looking to purchase a Collet System for my wood lathe and have looked at these two systems and am undeceided which one to purchase.  The Beall system is more expensive then the PSI system for the same number of collets but has other size collets available other then what comes with the standard set.  If anyone has any opinions on either set I would like to hear how you like them and how true the sets have run for you.  If you were buying a set which system would you buy??  Thanks in advance!!

Austy,

I have two of the Beall collet chucks with just one set of collets.  The Beall collet chucks use the standard ER 32 collets that you can purchase from many sources.  When I was considering the purchase of the collet chucks, I called PSI to find out what size of collets their chucks used.  The sales representative who takes the orders could not tell me, so she transferred me to a "technical" rep, and he could not tell me either.  My position is that if they don't know their product, I'm not buying from them, no matter the price differential, because somewhere in the future I'm going to want to buy a collet of a size that was not included in the kit and  will need to know what style of collet it is.  That happened to me once before and I ended up having to have a custom collet made.  You get what you pay for in quality and service.  Go with the Beall.  They are really nice folks to deal with as well.

Thanks for the information.  I was leaning toward the Beall system and your right if they can't answer a simple question about their product.  The money isn't the issue, quality is what counts to me.  Thanks for the information and the report on your experience with the Beall system.
