« on: October 17, 2009, 07:46:12 PM »
guys I have played it over in my head all day long and I am sick, I missed what was about a 170 class deer this morning at 260 yards, I have never seen a deer this big in the woods while hunting, I puked all the way back to the truck.

That is one awesome buck and at 260 yards anyone could miss it. That shot is`nt a chip shot and there are too many variables to cause a shot to be off. At least you did`nt wound the buck. I`m sorry for you Stumpy but you always have another day to pursue that fine animal! *up*

Stumpy, 260 is a hard shot in the best conditions with the best load. What were you shooting?

I have shot deer at that distance before with the rifle I was using, a 325 short mag with no problem, when I shot he just leaped off into the bedding area and there was no blood hair or nothing.

Shot one with a .270 once at just over 300 yards, he did the same thing jumped into a thicket. No blood. I had a Nikon Scope and cross hairs were 6 inches approx. over the kill zone. Long story short had a slight breeze L to R and the bullet hit him in the gut. Only gut shot I ever had. Followed the trail for  80 to 100 yards and found him. Only blood was at the drop site. Te wind caused the shot to miss the front shoulder area  by over a foot. Mike

that is way more then i feel comfortable shooting.  for me, the problem would lie with the indian, not the bow.  i don't practice that shot enough (or ever for that matter) to feel like i am capable of making it.  i know people who do and have no problem with long shots, but for me, i stick with shots closer in.

Man sorry to hear that.

Maybe you'll get another crack at him.  A buck that size, I'd been shaking like crazy!!!

... have found more than a few deer with no visable sign - they don't always leave a blood trail - many factors can be involved - no exit is usually #1 ...
... 260 yards - that range should be absolutely "no problem" for a short mag - what are you zero'ed at - how was the buck standing when you took the shot - how did you feel about the shot - steady rest ??
How far, & how long, did you look for the buck ??
... good luck with this one Stumpy - if all was good with the shot, I hope you find him - sounds like a great deer ...

I searched about a ten acre block he ran into and went up and down every pine row and searched the beaver ponds, I have killed a couple at this distance before with the same rifle with no problem, JR I hope I just flat out missed and have another turn to make things right with the old buck, I have killed a boatload of deer with this rifle and have never had a shot where it didn't leave a huge gaping hole on the exit wound but it could have stayed in I guess.
I have my rifle zeroed at 200
