Title: mystery wood
Post by: charlieparrish on October 15, 2010, 04:54:28 PM
I was rummaging around in the back of my shop yesterday looking for some rosewood...I found a small log of it and cut it, but thought I might need more...so I picked this log up  and it had about the right density and feel as rosewood...but when I cut it I found a very light tan .close grained wood with a band of yellow running through the heartwood.  It is part of some wood that I got from a professional arborist about 5 years ago...it is some sort of tree used in residential landscaping...but what is it??  Somebody help me!!!

If it wasn't for the yellow streak, and I can't see the grain close up,,,,,,My first guess is, Catalpa,,,from a distance.

Dave, I really don't have a clue as to what it is...it is close grained and relatively heavy... Like I said I got the stuff along with a truck load of wood that was cut by a professional arborist as part of a clean up and replant of an exclusive subdivision...there was rosewood, mahogany, acacia and some wood native to Hawaii along with the stuff in the picture...I guess I will just make a caller out of it and see how it does...probably a longbox to start with

I know little about woods . But I do know from experience that catalpa is very ,very tough and very light in weight . Can't say about the color or grain ,,,,haven't seen it .  Were it not for the yellow , it resembles American Hornbeam .

Looks very much like some type of Birch, there are so many variations it's hard to tell...Hornbean is a possiblity!
